# Connect Codex

Connect OpenAI Codex to Intangible's Model Context Protocol (MCP) server with one command, then build 3D scenes from the terminal.

Connect OpenAI's Codex to Intangible by adding Intangible's Model Context Protocol (MCP) server with a single command. Codex runs the sign-in for you as part of the same step. The server URL is `https://mcp.intangible.ai/mcp`.

## Before you connect Codex

You need an Intangible account and Codex. Sign up for Intangible at [studio.intangible.ai](https://studio.intangible.ai/?utm_source=help.intangible.ai\&utm_medium=docs\&utm_campaign=inline-link\&utm_content=connect-codex) if needed – see [Sign up and set up](/get-started/sign-up-and-set-up.md).

Update Codex before you start:

```bash
npm install -g @openai/codex@latest
```

Older versions default to a model that Codex rejects when you sign in with a ChatGPT account, with the error *"model is not supported when using Codex with a ChatGPT account"*. If you see it, update Codex or pick another model with `/model`.

{% hint style="info" %}
**OpenAI models only.** Codex passes Intangible's skills to a non-OpenAI model added as a custom provider. It then rejects every Intangible tool call as "unsupported call". To use an open model such as NVIDIA Nemotron, use Grok Build instead. See [Choosing a model](/intangible-mcp-agents/choosing-a-model.md).
{% endhint %}

## Codex: add the Intangible server

1. In a terminal, run:

   ```bash
   codex mcp add intangible --url https://mcp.intangible.ai/mcp
   ```
2. Your browser opens on an Intangible page that reads **Codex is requesting access to your Intangible account**. Click **Approve access**. The terminal prints `Successfully logged in.`
3. Confirm it registered:

   ```bash
   codex mcp list
   ```

   `intangible` appears with **Auth** set to **OAuth**.

## Codex: build a scene

1. Open a project in Studio at [studio.intangible.ai](https://studio.intangible.ai/?utm_source=help.intangible.ai\&utm_medium=docs\&utm_campaign=inline-link\&utm_content=connect-codex). Keep only that one Studio tab open.
2. Start `codex` in a terminal window.
3. Ask:

> Use the intangible MCP server. My Studio tab is open on my project. Build a small living room: a sofa facing a TV on a low stand, a coffee table between them, and a floor lamp in the corner behind the sofa.

4. Codex loads Intangible's orientation first, then builds. See [Describe your first scene](/intangible-mcp-agents/intangible-mcp-agents.md#describe-your-first-scene) for more on writing the description.

## Codex: sign in again

If Codex says your access token could not be refreshed, sign in again and restart Codex:

```bash
codex mcp login intangible
```

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.intangible.ai/intangible-mcp-agents/openai/connect-codex.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
